Surgery is not the first step for most people with knee pain. Physiotherapy, a healthier weight, activity changes, medicines, bracing, and injections are considered first. Many patients improve with these measures.
Knee replacement is discussed when pain and stiffness still stop you walking, sleeping, or doing daily activities after this care has been tried. The decision follows an examination and a review of the X-rays. Age alone does not decide it.
